The great French organist Jehan Alain was killed in action in 1940, and they say that sheets of music were found scattered around his corpse. Maurice Duruflé’s mighty memorial to his fallen friend crowns this Armistice Day recital, but Thomas Trotter prepares the way with solemn meditations and heartfelt laments from France, Germany, Finland and England - the haunting Elegy by his great Birmingham predecessor George Thalben-Ball.
