182 years ago this autumn, Felix Mendelssohn directed his oratorio St Paul here in Birmingham Town Hall, and astonished the city with his organ playing. Today, Thomas Trotter celebrates one of the most extraordinary moments in Birmingham’s musical history - with music by Mendelssohn, of course, but also Mendelssohn’s hero Bach, a delightful selection of Renaissance miniatures and Ad Wammes’s quirky, jazzy salute to the 17th century.
