John Kirkpatrick

John has a long history of involvement with folk music, first joining the Hammersmith Morris Men in 1959, taking up the melodeon, the button accordion and then the anglo concertina, becoming hooked on the traditional songs that were accompanied with a post-dancing pint. He went on to become one of the most prolific figures on the English folk scene, establishing a enviable reputation as an instrumental virtuoso and session musician as well as a leading interpreter of English folk music. He has been a member of the Albion Country Band, Magic Lantern, The Richard Thompson Band, Umps and Dumps, Steeleye Span, Brass Monkey, Tran-Europe Diatonique, and the Band oh Hope, and numerous ceilidh bands. As songwriter, composer, choreographer, and musical director, he has contributed to over sixty plays in the theatre and radio. He now lives in Shopshire and still dances with the Morris team he founded in 1975—the Shropshire Bedams, What a career! Tonight he will be performing his special own ‘Tunes from the Trenches’, commemorating the two World Wars.
