NT Live: Cyrano De Bergerac
This piece of pure theatre is the most exciting show in London right now. Director Jamie Lloyd and adapter Martin Crimp have updated and mutated Edmond Rostand’s 1897 verse drama about a soldier-poet with an enormous nose into a stripped-back, street-style rap battle.
This is a play about performance, so there are plenty of theatrical in-jokes, yet Lloyd’s production never feels arch. Indeed, the scenes during the siege of Arras, partly staged in complete darkness, are very moving. This extraordinary show caps an extraordinary year for Lloyd, in which he has already staged an entire season of Pinter plays, taken his Betrayal to New York, and won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for best musical for Evita.
