Five international choirs, eight soloists and a colossal orchestra: no wonder Mahler’s Eighth is known as the “Symphony of a Thousand”. “Try to imagine the whole universe beginning to ring and resound,” said Mahler. Exaggeration? Not when you hear it performed in Symphony Hall and not when Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla is conducting – so book early, as we launch the CBSO’s centenary year in truly roof-raising style.
CBSO+ 19 January, 5.45pm: Music writer and broadcaster Gavin Plumley delves into Mahler’s Eighth Symphony – one of the largest-scale choral works in the classical repertoire.
