Birmingham Heritage: Moseley Park FREE

Moseley Park is hidden behind the shops in Moseley Village. Saved from development in 1898 by some original Nimbys, it has ever since provided a green lung for the area. Previously owned by the family of John Taylor of Bordesley, the large pool at Moseley Park was created to a design by Humphry Repton. It is shown in the 1792 Red Book produced for John Taylor II of Moseley Hall. Walk round the pool, enjoy the peaceful oasis and test the echo in the well-preserved 18c icehouse. The icehouse is similar to one built at Bordesley Hall and to others elsewhere in the west midlands – the Moseley icehouse is remarkably well preserved. The ice chamber has never had to be repaired and is still used to store ice during festivals in the park. Its entrance reminds us that JRR Tolkien visited Moseley Park and perhaps this is where he first thought of Hobbit holes.
