The Escape Act

The Escape Act – A Holocaust Memoir us a one woman there show incorporating elements of circus and puppetry, based around the true story of Irene Danner-Storm, a Jewish acrobat who survived World War II hiding at the German Althoff Circus. The show switches between past and present, between character and performer, intersecting Irene’s life events with the performers experiences as a grandchild of Holocaust survivors. As Irene’s story triggers her memories, the performer is forced to let her past in.

Written and performed by New York artist Star Meishar, this show is a fascinating meeting of circus and theatre, of historical research and artistic exploration. It delves into the depths of multi-generational trauma and timeless humane questions and explores the power of circus as a place of refuge and escape.
