Workshops will be running throughout the festival and there will be a Closing Event on Saturday 13th October featuring music, comedy and buffet - we would love to see you at both events and at the festival.

JOINING THE FREE WORKSHOPS

CBSO: Dvorak's New World Symphony, 2 Oct 2012

2 Oct 2012 - Classical at Symphony Hall

As the inspiration behind London’s award-winning Aurora Orchestra, the young British conductor Nicholas Collon has thrown aside convention and let fresh air in on the capital’s music scene. Making his CBSO debut today, he’s the ideal partner for the inspirational Italian pianist Francesco Piemontesi in Mozart’s powerful 20th Piano Concerto – and just the man to bring new life to Dvorák’s everpopular New World Symphony. Berlioz’s playful Overture is the perfect appetiser, full of love and laughter.

The Festival will be screening a wide range of films that investigate the notion of Human Rights in the 21st Century as measured against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner, 2 Oct 2012 - 6 Oct 2012

2 Oct 2012 - 6 Oct 2012 - Theatre at The Old Rep Theatre

A long distance race. Real time. Follow one runner, alone with his thoughts. Colin is defiant. A young rebel, inhabiting the no-man's land of detention centres and young offenders' institutes, as his steady running rhythm transports him over a harsh frost bitten earth. Set in 2012, the play exposes the beating heart of a nation, still broken and still divided across class lines.

Using 3D visuals incorporated into an exciting design, we follow Colin's race, unpicking his thoughts and becoming part of his journey. Adapted by BAFTA winning and Olivier Award nominated playwright Roy Williams OBE (Sucker Punch, Fallout, Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads), this gritty adaptation of Alan Sillitoe's classic text hits the ground running; unlocking the biting realism of the original book while placing the drama firmly in a contemporary frame

In mourning for his father, Prince Siegfried finds solace in hunting in the forest. He comes across a moonlit lake and is astonished to see one of the swans transform into a beautiful Princess. She is Odette, who, under the evil Von Rothbart’s spell, spends her days as a swan, returning to human form as night falls. Only the love of one who has never loved before can save her from this fate, but when the Prince is tricked into declaring himself toVon Rothbart’s daughter Odile, magically disguised as Odette, all hope seems lost.

She is intensely rooted in south Indian classical music alongside having formal western classical music education.

Adding on to this, she has flourished as a performer and composer, exploring lush ground in the crossover between Indian music and a variety of contemporary flavours including jazz, Irish folk, electronica, flamenco, blues, pop, Western classical and the ‘Bollywood’ music. Her violin playing has a nice blend of 'bhava' [musical expression and emotion] & fingering technique, a result of three ‘decades of experimentation’ as per a critic.

Considered one of the best recorder makers in the world, Adrian Brown has worked for many years on establishing a checklist of surviving Renaissance recorders and this concert seeks to highlight Adrian’s groundbreaking research into the instruments.

The Festival will be screening a wide range of films that investigate the notion of Human Rights in the 21st Century as measured against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

With a wide selection of specially invited guest speakers – filmmakers, commentators, academics and campaigners – our aim is to give audiences the opportunity to discuss and debate the issues highlighted in the films.

With recent events at home and abroad, ongoing uprisings in the Middle East, political repression in Russia, the threat of extradition of whistleblowers to the USA, the freedom and privacy of the internet called into question, the media and poilce under investigation in the UK as well as the consequences of recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq – the whole concept of Human Rights is once again under intense scrutiny.
